Partner focus.....Lou Shaw

Our Senior Move Managers come from different walks of life. They are what makes the service so wonderful and what makes a real difference to our client's home moves.

We wanted to share a bit more about our Senior Move Managers going forward. This month we are focussing on Lou Shaw - one of our experienced partners working in the South.

What is your favourite part of working as a Senior Move Manager?

I love hearing all the life stories I get from the seniors I work with. These stories and memories are often triggered by items we might find during the decluttering and downsizing process. Move day is always an important day and it is so rewarding to see a happy new resident and their new home, having helped them to achieve a move that they believed impossible.

What part of your work do you find the hardest?

Explaining to a client that their treasured family heirlooms which have been passed down through the generations, have little or no value. I will always send photos to an auction house for evaluation, but unfortunately as we know, fashion dictates value and traditional, brown furniture is not as desirable to today's buyer.

What did you do before becoming a Senior Move Manager?

I worked in the design industry, initially as a packaging designer and then moving to client services where I managed large pan European packaging launches. During this time my roles always involved organisation whether it was in the design studio, budget or project management.

What misconceptions do people have about our work?

Most people are unaware that a Senior Move Management service exists. When it is explained, seniors are so grateful for the help and advice that we can provide. The prospect of a move in later life is both daunting and stressful and with our help they can achieve the move they know will enhance their wellbeing and quality of life.

If you get a free moment, what do you do to unwind?

My free time is spent in two very different ways. In the hustle and bustle of London visiting galleries or spending the evening at the theatre. As a complete contrast, I leave town to hike in the Surrey Hills and North Downs where I can walk for hours without seeing another person and enjoy the fresh air.

What's the most unique request you have dealt with for a client?

These relate to antique items or collections that a client wants to sell or move to family members. Examples include relocating a 7ft long elephant tusk, 16th Century family portraits, cavalry swords and an extensive collection of Concorde memorabilia.
