What is your favourite part of working as a Senior Move Manager?

I love seeing the look of relief on my clients face on Move day. So often it’s dreaded, with clients focusing on the stress and all the bits and pieces they have to do etc.. When they see it’s actually all in hand, and that they can go relax, have a cuppa, enjoy the facilities at their new home whilst I unpack is just so rewarding. Especially when they come back hours later and find that their home is already well on its way to being set up.

What part of your work do you find the hardest?

The most difficult part is helping people come to terms with how much they have to downsize by. It’s almost always challenging because they are letting go of a lifetime of treasures that have memories attached to them. There’s a sadness in letting go. However, its also a great honour to hold someone through this, especailly when what they are moving to will provide so much more support and ease in their lives.

What did you do before becoming a SMM?

As most of us, I am a professional organiser and was before being approached to be an SMP. However, previous to that my career had been as a project manager with the NHS. I wanted something new to do after 15 years of service, so I tried a few things such as being a massage and holistic therapist, before finding proffessional organising.

What misconceptions do people have about our work?

I’ve found that some clients, when I first contact them believe its a service only for those who aren’t able to do things for themselves. Not understanding that it can be such a huge support for anyone, of any age or ability since moving can be incredibly stressful.

If you get a free moment, what do you do to unwind?

I love painting, writing and photography. They’ve been my passions for many years and I’ve often fantasied about writing a book when I retire.

What is the most unique request you have dealt with for a client and how did you do so?

I’m not sure it’s unique but it was quite an experience. A client of mine hadn’t been in his loft in some 30 years and had no idea what he was storing. It was divided into three areas, across three buildings that had been altered to create one large home, so the loft was a maze. I had to scramble on my belly at times, getting absolutely covered in cobwebs and dust, I literally looked like a feather duster. When my client saw the state of me, he literally couldn’t stop laughing. I found some incredible things, such as letters between his mum and dad during the war years and their wedding rings. It was totally worth the effort.
